Industrial Property Figures for 2022 Have Been Announced!

As Türkiye undergoes a domestic and national transformation in every field of industry, it is also breaking records in industrial property rights.

Mustafa Varank, the former Minister of Industry and Technology, shared the 2022 industrial property data with the public and announced that 290,000 domestic industrial property applications were filed in 2022. Varank stated, “For the first time since 1994, domestic patent applications filed with Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) exceeded foreign patent applications. Türkiye’s number of registered patents has increased 46-fold over the last 20 years.”

Records Continue to Be Broken as Türkiye Develops

In his statement, Varank said, “As Turkish industry develops, grows, and gains a culture of research and development, new records continue to emerge in the field of industrial property.”

The Number Exceeded 9,000

Varank announced the 2022 industrial property statistics for the first time. A total of 290,014 domestic industrial property applications were filed with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, including:

  • 9,009 patents

  • 5,502 utility models

  • 197,235 trademarks

  • 78,268 designs

When compared to the previous year, domestic patent applications increased by 7%, utility model applications by 25%, trademark applications by 12%, and design applications by 32%.

Patent Registrations Increased by 2%

Emphasizing that domestic patent applications surpassed foreign applications for the first time since 1994, Varank stated:

“In 2002, while there were 414 domestic patent applications in our country, there were 1,460 foreign patent applications. Last year, however, 9,009 domestic patent applications were filed compared to 6,847 foreign patent applications. The number of patent registrations increased by 2% compared to 2021, reaching 3,407. Thus, Türkiye’s number of patent registrations has increased 46 times over the last 20 years. With 291 geographical indication registrations made last year and 32 registrations made in January of this year, the total number of registered geographical indications reached 1,313.”

Since the Establishment of TÜRKPATENT

In addition to applications from companies and citizens based in Türkiye, industrial property applications are also filed with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office from various countries around the world. Since the institution’s establishment in 1994, domestic patent applications exceeded foreign patent applications for the first time.
